Benefits

Current Opening — Investment Analyst

The Role: As an Investment Analyst, you will work closely with the investment team to evaluate new opportunities within the MedTech sector. You will conduct quantitative and qualitative research then synthesize your findings into clear investment insights and recommendations.

The role is centered on understanding unmet clinical needs and the commercial and regulatory environment surrounding new medical devices. Beyond that, our analysts strive to understand the ideal paths to exit for the companies in which we invest. That requires a strong understanding of the small group of large MedTech companies that strategically acquire startups. To that end, we are looking for someone who is intellectually curious, a self-starter, comfortable engaging with technical and scientific material, and excited to develop a deep understanding of emerging medical technologies and the clinical problems they are designed to solve.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct detailed diligence on prospective MedTech investments, including reviews of clinical literature, disease states, current standards of care, competing technologies, market dynamics, and potential return scenarios
  • Analyze the hurdles likely to be experienced by prospective investments in achieving reimbursement from major insurers and government programs
  • Evaluate technical and financial background materials and identify key findings for the investment team
  • Participate in diligence calls with company management teams, physicians, customers, technical experts, and other relevant stakeholders
  • Monitor the actions of MedTech’s small number of strategic acquirers in order to understand the likelihood of acquisition of potential investments
  • Develop independent perspectives and synthesize research and expert feedback into clear investment recommendations.
  • Prepare and present investment recommendations to leadership, including the development of detailed investment memos and presentation materials for the Investment Committee
  • Monitor developments within MedTech markets, emerging technologies, relevant clinical research, regulatory changes, and portfolio company milestones
  • Represent Unorthodox Ventures at industry conferences and events and build relationships with entrepreneurs, physicians, industry experts, and other investors

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with a strong academic record
  • Strong interest in medical technology and healthcare innovation
  • Academic or professional background in business, finance, economics, biology, biomedical engineering, pre-medicine, or another life science or engineering discipline
  • Ability to critically evaluate scientific literature, clinical evidence, and technical claims
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex information into concise conclusions and recommendations
  • Intellectual curiosity and willingness to develop expertise in unfamiliar disease states, procedures, technologies, and medical specialties
  • Ability to work independently, take ownership of projects, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Collaborative with a team-oriented mindset and strong work ethic
